Although there is little information about the formal organization of women during Christ's time, we learn from the New Testament that women were active participants in the Savior's ministry. Their testimonies and service were great examples!
On March 17, 1842, Joseph Smith formally organized the Relief Society through the priesthood. They were divinely charged to "relieve the poor" and "save souls."
Concerning the Relief Society, Joseph Fielding Smith said," You are members of the greatest women's organization in the world, an organization which is a vital part of the kingdom of God on earth and which is so designed and operated that it helps its faithful members to gain eternal life in our Father's kingdom.
